Prepared under a USAID contract, this paper reviews ways in which communities have contributed cash, labour and other resources to support primary health care. Activities include drug sales, production-based prepayment, community or individual labour, and income-generating schemes. The report is written for those concerned with community financing, recounting where and how such methods have been attempted, what costs they have defrayed, and what kinds of extracommunal assistance have been needed. Projects using community financing are listed in an appendix (by country within regional divisions -- Africa, Asia, Latin America). Case histories of various primary health care projects are also presented (from 31 African, Asian and Latin American countries).
