Administration of colostrum for the prevention of infection in the low birth weight infant in a developing country

The use of limited volumes of colostrum (10 ml, administered 3 times/day) was evaluated to assess the feasibility of its use as an alternative to breast milk for infection prevention when an adequate supply of the latter is lacking for infant feeding. Colostrum was fed to 33 high-risk, low-birth-weight infants and compared with 33 matched controls who were fed nursery formula only. Infection incidence was significantly lower in the colostrum-fed infants. (wz)
