Until recently, erythema multiforme was classed with cryptogenic illnesses. It is now known that most minor forms of the disorder are secondary to distant herpes infections. The virus can be detected in a biopsy of the cutaneous lesions. Most of the other instances of erythema multiforme are iatrogenic.
