Between 1971 and 1980 more than 6,000,000 hysterectomies were performed in the USA. Dysfunctional uterine haemorrhagia with non tumoral uterus and hypertrophic characteristic has been one of the principal indications, without possibility of definition as a pathological entity with its own characteristics. With all these premises the Authors have attempted to see, by means of morphometric studies, the myocyte characteristics and the proportion and composition of the uterine wall and at the same time eventual hormone dependence of this phenomenon. For this they turn to determination of oestrogen and progesterone receptors.
