Forty patients affected by acute inflammatory or degenerative conditions of the locomotory apparatus were randomly divided into 2 groups of equal number. They were treated with morniflumate (700 mg .times. 2/day p.o.) or niflumic acid (250 mg .times. 3-4/day p.o.). The aim of the study was to verify and compare the efficacy and tolerance of the 2 preparations. The treatment lasted 7 days. At the end of this period the patients who had a good therapeutic response finished the study, whereas those with only partially good results and good tolerance continued treatment for another 7 days. Patients with poor improvement of symptoms and/or poor tolerance inverted the preparation and were treated for another week. Both preparations were active. Morniflumate had a slightly better efficacy, and gastrointestinal tolerance was superior to that of the comparative drug. None of the patients receiving morniflumate had to change treatment whereas 5 patients initially treated with niflumic acid had to invert treatment. The substitution of niflumic acid with morniflumate led to the disappearance or clear improvement of undesired effects induced by the first treatment.
