India's rapidly expanding population base marks it out among developing countries. Mortality began to decline in India in the 1920s but, since fertility continued to stay at a high level, the country has not yet been able to complete its demographic transition. The 1991 Census data show that India has now reached the take-off stage from the point of view of its demographic transition. The paper analyses some aspects of India's population, mainly with a view to examining the changing nature of its demographic situation between 1981 and 1991. Data are broken down by state and union territory in tabular form and illustrated in map form. Subsections deal with population growth, sex composition and literacy. Strenuous efforts are needed to reduce the country's rate of natural increase.
