Breda virus-like particles in pigs in South Africa

From August to November 1992 at an intensive piggery near Pretoria, a sudden increased mortality in weaned piglets 6-8 weeks of age was investigated. Piglets stopped eating, became weak with shivering and tremors, and died after becoming recumbent for varying lengths of time. Occasionally diarrhoea developed before other clinical signs were seen. Escherichia coli O149:K91,88 was isolated from most of the 35 piglets examined. Breda virus like particles were isolated from 6 of 22 faecal samples obtained during PM examination. This is the first report of Breda virus-like particles in pigs in South Africa.
