These results support other studies that indicate that M.V.D. is the best procedure to treat these patients. There are some points to emphasize M.V.D. in order to achieve the best results and lowest complication rate. These include - good preoperative patient preparation; - more lateral suboccipital craniectomy to expose the cranial nerves with minimal retration; - adequate drainage of CSF from the cistern before attempting to identify the nerve; - thorough inspection of the affected cranial nerve, especially in the root entry (exit) zone; - adequate mobilization of blood vessels and stable interposition of teflon felt between the blood vessels and the affected nerve.
