Reasons for female circumcision among some ethnic groups in Bendel State, Nigeria

This study documents and analyses the reasons for female circumcision among 5 communities in Bendel State of Nigeria. Statistical findings reveal that variations exist in the age of circumcision according to cultural preferences, but, nevertheless, the number of female children circumcised is high. The commonest reason given for this is the strong desire to continue the custom or tradition. Other reasons given for the practice in terms of preference are, to protect babies during delivery, for aesthetic or cosmetic purposes, to enhance reproduction and to increase or decrease sexual urge among women. It is said, however, that such explanations are subsumed under the issue of patriarchy or male dominance, as well as under class and gender problems. A strategy for the elimination of female circumcision would therefore include the curtailing of these overriding explanations. It is also recommended that other issues related to circumcision be focused on, such as maternal and child health. There is a particularly urgent need for illiteracy programmes designed for adults, so that equal opportunities can be created for both sexes.
