Generalized actinomycosis in an 8-month-old child

A case is reported in an 8-month-old male infant who showed rapid swelling of the abdomen, apathy and periodic temperature rise to 38 degrees C. Ultrasound and laparotomy revealed nodular masses on the mesentery. Following chemotherapy with vincristine and cyclophosphamide, the condition deteriorated and the child died. Postmortem examination revealed multiple foci of actinomycosis, involving skin, lungs, myocardium, kidneys and the serous membranes of the intestine. It is suggested that the chemotherapy for the tumour had favoured generalization of the actinomycosis.
