This paper, examining the state of family planning in Bangladesh, is based on three national surveys of 1975, 1979 and 1981, and evidence from various micro level studies carried out in various parts of the country are also considered. Section 1 evaluates briefly the development and growth of the family planning programme in Bangladesh. Section 2 examines the knowledge of and attitude towards family planning. Section 3 examines the level of contraceptive use in Bangladesh and Section 4 looks at some of the basic issues concerning family planning in the country. Conclusions in Section 5 suggest a steady increase in the adoption of family planning methods from 1976-81, but still a low level of use. Policies that could spread the use of family planning are then discussed.
