A model of therapeutic community for the stationary treatment of patients with addictive diseases is outlined. Its leading idea says that the main task for patients as well as therapists is to try to integrate the polar concepts of empathy and discipline. Consequences of this framework for group psychotherapy are discussed with regard to the attitude of the therapist and to his behaviour within the session.
