Two cases of acute onset systemic illness in dogs is reported; clinical symptoms included gross limb oedema, muscular necrosis and gas production. Clostridium perfringens was isolated as the most significant pathogen in a mixed bacterial culture from one dog. A good response was seen using radical surgical aeration, clavulanate potentiated amoxycillin in combination with metronidazole and allowing healing by secondary intention.
