Psychological aspects of contraception with Multiload Cu50

75 women aged 19-43 were inserted with a Multiload Cu250 at the Medical and Social Gynecological Clinic of the University of Basel, Switzerland. 48 of these patients were reexamined 6-8 weeks after insertion to verify complications and failures; the patients were asked to fill in a questionnnaire prepared for the purpose, and to take the Fribourg Personality Test, and the Rosenweig Picture-Frustration Test. Side effects rate was about 44%, main symptoms being prolonged bleeding, pain, and cramps. While statistical correlation between side effects and socioeconomic factors was not studied, it was obvious that patients presenting the highest rate of side effects were those emotionally torn between the desire to have a child and the fear of conception, while being unable to deal with the conflict. The author of this article insists on the importance of a serious talk between patient and gynecologist before prescription of an IUD to recognize and, if possible, to prevent such conflict.
