Embryotoxic effect of rifampicin on rats

An attempt was made to study the embryotoxic properties of rifampicin administered to rats in various periods of pregnancy and to determine dose-dependent characteristics of this antibiotic based on the embryotoxic effect. Rifampicin in a 75 and a 200 mg per 1 kg of body wt dose is characterized by embryotoxic effect, which increases with an increase in the dose. The embryotoxic effect in rats is most manifest when it is administered during organogenesis and embryo's highest sensitivity to the teratogenic action of drugs: from the 6th to 16th and 9th to 12th days of pregnancy, respectively.
