The article presents a brief profile of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It represents the world's largest multilateral source of grants for technical and pre-investment assistance to developing countries. Since its inception in 1966 its administrators have consistently been American. Despite the growth of the UN system and the decline in available funds, UNDP remains at the centre of the United Nations (UN) development system with its 113 field offices functioning as the 'foreign service' of the UN. UNDP tends to support a large number of projects which deal with natural resources and their management or exploitation. Such projects inevitably have environmental significance. The article reviews the UNDP's environmental role.
