The paper examines the constraints on economic development in mainland China resulting from population pressure. The size and trends of China's population, together with estimates of population growth and expected size by the year 2000, are presented. Demographic characteristics are detailed, and the differences in expected growth rates between urban and rural areas discussed. The paper then goes on to discuss the problems which will arise in the agricultural, health care and housing sectors, and in the labour market. There is a need for increased investment in agriculture, especially in land substituting investments such as fertilizer. There is a high possibility that the demands of an increased population will not be met. Imports are likely to be increased to meet the deficit.
