In order to assess and monitor the impact on the environment of changes from extensive to intensive agriculture in Asia, the working group recommends measurement of the following parameters, considering both direct and indirect, short-term and long-term effects:- (1) soil (physical - erosion, effective rooting depth, structure, bulk density; chemical - nutrient status, pH, carbon, electrical conductivity, heavy metals; biological - activity, diversity); (2)water (quantity - surface water flow patterns, groundwater recharge rates; quality of surface and groundwater); (3) climate (microclimate ; global climate - nitrogenous gases, NH3, NxO, CO2, methane); (4) crops and animals (yield, crop quality, animal product quality); (5) socio-economics (income - education, health, welfare, diversification in income source; land pressure, land value, national/rural revenue, changes in services, employment). Detailed examination of the criteria will provide guidelines for environmental impact assessment.
