Continuity in the use of iuds in patients from the service of family planning in the imss mexican institute for social security

An analysis of the continuity in the use of intrauterine devices (IUD) and the reasons for giving it up in the patients of the service of family planning (IMSS) is presented of a survey of 2,864 women. The biggest continuity was observed in women between ages of 20 to 34 years old or with 1 or 2 previous children. The discomfort (pain, bleeding or vaginal infection) are the main reasons for giving up the IUD. The ejection of the IUD seems to be associated with the moment of insertion and affects the continuity in the initial months of postpartum and post abortion insertion. We propose that the calculation of active IUD users in the IMSS be made applying two series of continuity rate: one for women during an interval and another for post-partum and post abortion cases.
