Document Number: 382755
Current investigations reported include: Breeding and horticulture: Introductions; crosses and interspecific grafts; comparisons of clones from cuttings, grafts and seeds from open or controlled pollination; comparisons of hybrids and progenies of open pollination; inheritance of flowery gall resistance; different levels of Phytophthora palmivora infection among cultivars in the field; resistance of some cultivars to die-back and insects; differences in flowery gall symptoms among hybrids; and pollination by flower movement. Physiology: The residual effect of fertilizers on soil chemical properties; influence of N, P and K fertilization on flowery gall; rehabilitation of old plantings with fertilizers, fungicides and insecticides; fertilization of young cacao with minor elements; effect of Zn and B deficiencies on flowering and fruiting of adult cacao in soilless culture; effect of Zn and B deficiencies on the synthesis of phenolic substances and free amino acids in leaves; cacao tolerance to mineral salts; seed storage; and physiological mechanism of Phytophthora palmivora resistance. Pathology: Studies on Phytophthora pod rot including the use of mulches, ground sprays and diseased pod removal as control measures, sources of inoculum, malachite green as a fungicide, a systematic search for resistance in bearing trees, and the role of chlamydospores in the survival of the fungus in the soil; fungicide studies in the control of die-back, black pod rot and Colletotrichum leaf spot; a study of Colletotrichum sp. strains in cacao; pod rot caused by Fusarium roseum; and fermentation and drying studies.
