Comparison of bronchoalveolar lavage and respiratory secretion cytology in horses with histologically diagnosed pulmonary disease

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from 70 horses and respiratory secretions (RS) from 61 horses were examined cytologically. Patients were grouped according to the histopathology: normal lung (n=8), pulmonary eosinophilic infiltration (n=9), interstitial pneumonia (n=5), pulmonary haemorrhage (n=5) and small airway diseases (mild n=12, moderate n=7, and severe n=24). In horses with pulmonary disease all BAL and all but one RS samples differed cytologically from those of healthy horses; however, type and severity could not always be determined by BAL and/or RS cytology.
