Destructive pulmonary tuberculosis in agricultural workers

Clinical features and efficacy of treatment of destructive pulmonary tuberculosis were investigated in 175 workers of present-day agriculture. In the majority of these cases, tuberculosis was detected during medical consultation. It was characterized by a great extent of specific changes and marked intoxication symptoms. An infiltrative form of the disease was prevalent. Changes in the tracheobronchial tree were revealed during tracheobronchoscopy in 60.3% of the observed patients. For the in-patient period of treatment when conservative therapeutic methods were used, cavity closure was achieved in 31.1% of the newly detected patients and in 5 of 13 remaining cases with recurrent tuberculosis, thus indicating the necessity of a wider and timely application of surgical intervention techniques.
