In a retrospective study of male and female prostitutes in Singapore the timing of 93 episodes of early syphilis in relation to treatment of gonorrhoea with penicillin during the 3 months before syphilis was diagnosed was examined. Those who had received less anti-gonococcal penicillin during the 3-month period than in other 3-month periods developed syphilis significantly more often. The authors believe that penicillin given in doses sufficient to treat gonorrhoea will abort coincidental syphilis. It is therefore proposed to add penicillin to non-treponemicidal treatment for gonorrhoea to assist in the control of syphilis where this is very prevalent.G.W. Csonka.
