Allergy to hymenoptera stings--review of the world literature: 1953-1970

In this review of allergy to stings by Hymenoptera, it is pointed out that from 1950-59 in the United States there were 229 deaths recorded from such stings compared with 138 from bites by snakes, 65 by bites from spiders and 28 by other creatures. The honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) accounted for 124 of the deaths. Death from stings by Hymenoptera is rapid, 96% of the 229 being dead within 5 and 66% within 1 h. The composition of the venom is discussed.
