The author shows, with special reference to EEG examination of 20 patients suffering from temporal epilepsy, how methodological errors made in the use of bipolar wiring may lead to the exclusion of anterior temporal spikes and pointed waves from recording. In view of this circumstance, emphasis is laid on the necessity of combining two projections of bipolar wiring and the most efficient succession of their use is suggested: first variable-area and then longitudinal. This is justified by the fact that variable-area wiring compares favourably with longitudinal wiring in the recognition of anterior temporal specific paroxysmal complexes.
