The University of Hawaii School of Medicine has developed a series of competency-based training (CBT) modules using non-physician practitioners. CBT relates the course content directly to job performance, with the emphasis placed on active learning. Protocols and high risk factors are two mechanisms that are useful for standardizing performance. Following task analysis to adopt the module to local conditions, it can be used for training middle level health workers, especially in rural areas of developing countries. A sample task analysis table and a list of topics for 24 "generic" modules are given.
