In the two decades during which one of us (HW) has been privileged to know and collaborate with Margaret Turner-Warwick, her activities, like this Festschrift, have spanned the continents and the important topics in lung diseases. Moreover, she has done so with verve and scholarship, stimulating and teaching grateful colleagues and students. Among Margaret's eclectic interests have been the mineral dust diseases, particularly their pathogenesis. In this regard, no diseases caused by workplace exposures have been more intensively studied than the asbestos-induced disorders, particularly in the last two decades. These investigative efforts have been shared by a wide range of biomedical research disciplines, and have had as their primary objective more successful prevention of the asbestos-related diseases. It is our intention to review six topics relating to asbestos health effects, in an effort to assess how successfully the stated goal has been achieved; these are: (1) airways effects; (2) host factors; (3) progression of asbestosis; (4) fibre type influence on mesothelioma; (5) risk of lung malignancy in relation to fibrosis; (6) risk of low level exposures.
