Pulmonary manifestations of helminth invasion

Nine cases of pulmonary diseases associated with Clonorchis (7) and Strongyloides (2) infections were seen at the Khabarovsk Medical Institute, Russia, in the past 2 years. Clonorchis infection was the only agent of disease in 6 of the patients and caused pleuritis, bronchial obstruction and bronchial asthma; these symptoms resolved following anthelmintic treatments although bronchial distress increased during therapy. Strongyloidiasis caused pleuritis and pneumonia. Eosinophilia was present in all the patients. Two case histories are presented. Patients with lung infections presenting with eosinophilia and with eosinophils in sputum or pleural fluid should be investigated for parasites.
