Studies of Ig-containing cells in human colostrum led to the conclusion that the IgA associated with these cells was mainly found in phagocytic cells and was not actively synthesized in large quantities by colostral cells of B lymphocyte lineage. Cells secreting IgM, IgG and IgA were detected in long-term cultures successfully established from 11 samples of colostral cells. These cultures were maintained for several months. Addition of IL-6 had no effect on the number of Ig-secreting colostral cells or the Ig isotype.
