Chickpea [Cicer arietinum] cultivar Phule G87207, derived from the cross K850 x ICCL80074, was recommended for commercial cultivation in medium to heavy soils of western Maharashtra in September 1995, under the name of Vishal. In 53 trials conducted in Maharashtra during 1988-95, it gave an average seed yield of 2004 kg/ha, outyielding the control Vishwas by 15.9%. It also has higher resistance to wilt [Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceris] and pod-borer (Helicoverpa armigera) than other cultivars. It has high protein and methionine contents (28.5% and 0.97 g/16 g N, respectively) and good characteristics for roasting.
