The diagnostic potential of the immunofluorescent and immunoperoxidase method for the rapid diagnosis of herpetic infection in obstetrics and gynecology were compared with those of the complement fixation test [CFT]. Seventy-five patients were examined. The blood and cerebrospinal fluid of the patients were tested for the content of herpetic antigen and presence of antibodies to herpes simplex virus. Case histories of 7 patients were described. It was found that it is very important for the diagnosis of the disease to establish the fact of viremia in herpes. However, it is not always possible to isolate herpes virus from te blood during acute and chronic course of herpetic infection. Therefore, recommendations were made for using traditional laboratory methods (CFT and enzyme immunoassay) along with the isolation of herpes simplex virus to detect herpetic infection.
