The authors report the development of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for the detection of chlamydia in avian faecal samples. The method is extremely sensitive and specific but because clinically normal birds may shed chlamydia intermittently it is recommended that three faecal samples or swabs taken over a 4 or 5 day period are examined.
