Seventy-two newborns at risk of infection were studied. In the afterbirths of these newborns leucocytic infiltrations were found in 31.9% of cases and Gram-positive organisms prevailed. In the group of newborns with leucocytic infiltrations present in the afterbirth, bacteraemia, left-shift of the differential white blood cell count, and decreased platelet count were more frequent. The course of the adaptation period of these newborns was more frequently disturbed, and infections developed more frequently and earlier. The presence of leucocytic infiltrations in the afterbirth of infected newborns points out that the infection developed within the uterus.
