The immunological status of 14 women taking oral contraceptives for a prolonged period (more than 6 months, low dose pill) was studied. Phytohaemagglutinin-induced lymphocyte stimulation (PILT) was significantly depressed in these subjects, though the T-lymphocyte subpopulation was found to be normal. Serum IgA and IgG levels were also normal but the IgM level was increased. Surprisingly, Giardia lamblia was found in only one of the 14 women, although its incidence is normally high in immunocompromised individuals.
