Basic principles of the organization and work of the Republican Center for preclinical study of new drugs are presented. The Center is engaged in research of the total and specific toxicity of various preparations including a study of the acute, subacute and chronic toxicity, mutagenicity, embryotoxicity and the influence on the reproductive function, the degree of allergy, the effectiveness of antituberculous preparations; it also performs pharmacological screening of new chemical compounds for detecting their antituberculous activity. A short survey of the Center's activity is presented. It has been concluded that the toxicologic testing of the potential drugs requires complex study in specialized laboratories. This allows comprehensive assessment of the harmlessness of new drugs and hastening of toxicologic research.
