A review is given of the literature on endemic diseases (including malaria, plague, tsutsugamushi disease (scrub typhus), endemic (shop) typhus, dengue and filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia (W.) malayi) in the former Netherlands East Indies up to the time of transfer of sovereignty to Indonesia and on diseases including malaria, filariasis caused by W. bancrofti, yellow fever and dengue in Surinam. Indications are given of the incidence and of some of the vectors.
