The author examines "the nature and extent of age misreporting in the various socio-economic classes based on a sample survey conducted by the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta in the villages of the districts around Calcutta in 1978." The results show considerable variation among the various social groups, with higher errors reported for Muslims, manual laborers, and women, particularly literate women.
