Lactating mice were immunized with monoclonal antibody to F glycoprotein of respiratory syncytial virus 4-8 days post partum. This antibody (Ab-1), transferred via milk, induced anti-Ab-1 antibody (Ab-2) in the neonates after weaning. Subsequent challenge with F glycoprotein resulted in a booster response, which was also seen when infant mice from non-immunized mothers were challenged after receiving Ab-2 at 2-3 wk of age. In another study in rats, however, anti-ovalbumin antibody transferred via milk suppressed the neonate's IgE response to ovalbumin, probably by inducing suppressor T cells.
