Some correlates of fertility

Interactions between nutritional status and fertility differentials were assessed. Indicators reflective of health and nutrition, socioeconomic status, fertility and mortality were utilised at community and state levels in India and countries at the international level. Methods of correlation matrices, path coefficient analysis and multiple regression models of fertility rates were utilised. Findings revealed that: (1) Infant and toddler mortality rates were positively correlated with fertility; (2) Socio-economic indicators were inversely related with fertility and mortality; (3) Communities with better nutritional status were found with lower fertility, lower mortality and better socio-economic status than those with poor nutritional status; (4) Economic status and nutritional status were positively associated; (5) for given level of mortality, economic status or nutritional status were found to be positively correlated with fertility rates; and (6) Literacy status of population and newspaper circulation and mortality rates in vulnerable segments of the population were found to be more influential on variations in fertility.
