Iodine deficiency leads to a variety of disorders of which goiter was the first to be recognized. Subsequently, it has been shown that maternal iodine deficiency leads to fetal wastage and increased infant and childhood mortality, clinical neurological abnormalities (deaf-mutism, spastic diplegia, and mental retardation) and subclinical deficits which may be made apparent with quantifiable measures of cognitive and motor functioning. Deficiency of iodine during childhood and adolescence may also give rise to suboptimal mental performance.
