Acne is a cutaneous disease resulting from a hyper-activity of sebaceous follicles associated to an eccessive sebum production varying from person to person. The cutaneous regions with the highest sebaceous-gland density are: face, breast-bone and back. Although acne etiology is multifactorial, oil gland activity and sebum production partly depend on androgenic stimulation. Androgens in women stimulate the speed of mitoses and the epithelial proliferation of sebaceousgland acini, thus increasing lipoid syntesis, while estrogens inhibit, maybe locally, oil production.
