The paper deals with the reliability of the bicarbonate concentration as calculated by contemporary analyzers of acid-base equilibrium. The author demonstrates on the basis of the quoted investigations that this parameter is unreliable. It can lead to serious diagnostic and therapeutic errors. The author draws attention to possible solutions of this situation in the modern treatment of acid-base disturbances.
