Maternal and child health is of prime importance to Africa and will remain so. This is demonstrated by increasing budgetary allocations, improved policies, and growing personnel and facility provisions in the area of family health in recent years. The paper contends that maternal and child health can be effectively studied within the context of economic development strategies. It therefore analyses the relationship of aspects of development policy, primarily economic and budgetary planning, regional and rural development, to the health status of mothers and children and fertility issues. The strategies which are found to exert an influence on health are those aimed at participatory development, increasing food and agricultural production and productivity, and increasing levels of income.
