The correspondents reply to Banerjee et al. (American Journal of Gastroenterology (1990) 85, 1433-1444) and state that small bowel involvement in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is not uncommon. They report the case of a 32-year-old man with AIDS in whom duodenal biopsy revealed total villous atrophy and dense infiltration by amastigotes of Leishmania donovani. This patient had a coincidental intestinal infection with Mycobacterium avium- intracellulare complex.
