This article is devoted to brief descriptions of some of the internal parasites that may be carried by dogs and cats, and which can be transmitted to humans. The parasites described are the ones most likely to be a source of health problems encountered by the average family physician. Toxocara canis, T. cati, Ancylostoma braziliensis, A. duodenale, Necator americanus, Dipylidium caninum, Enterobius vermicularis, Dirofilaria immitis, Trichuris trichiura, T. vulpis and Toxoplasma gondii are considered. In addition, arthropod-borne diseases are discussed with special reference to fleas, ticks, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease.
