Partial roentgenoendovascular occlusion is presented as an alternative to splenectomy in pediatric hematology. Sixty-four children ages 10 months to 14 years underwent partial roentgenoendovascular occlusion for the treatment of blood diseases (beta-thalassemia, Gaucher's disease, histocytosis X). It was concluded that roentgenoendovascular occlusion of the spleen is indicated in the presence of hypersplenism, a greatly enlarged spleen, and the ineffectiveness of conservative therapy. The procedure results in the stabilization of hypersplenism and a reduction is spleen size, making it possible to pursue conservative therapy.
