Age correction for prematurity is still discussed controversially, however it is now recommended in most studies; the main argument of its opponents is that by an age correction the developmental quotients become inadequately high, i.e. overcorrection, and by this a retardation can be overlooked. For the same reason some authors recommend a partial age correction. According to the results of the Bonn longitudinal study a complete age correction is necessary at least in the first two years because of the very rapid development. By this an overdiagnosis of a retardation is avoided and herewith unnecessary trouble for the family.
