Regional pattern of nuptiality and fertility in Canada: 1921-1986

Regional patterns in nuptiality and fertility in Canada during the period 1921-1986 are examined through the use of the familiar Coale indices I-m, I-g, I-h and I-f. It was found that the biggest factor in the fertility decline as measured by I-f has been due to the declines in I-g and less due to I-m. Though non marital fertility as measured by I-h has been increasing, it no way compensates for the drastic decline in marital fertility. The patterns show that regional differences have been decreasing both in nuptiality and fertility behaviours supporting the hypothesis that industrialization and economic development breaks down regional barriers in human behaviours.
