Use of the suction knife in the surgical treatment of 11 patients (6 females, 5 males, aged 15-52 years) in Germany with hepatic hydatid disease due to Echinococcus granulosus infection, is described. The cysts were located in the left lobe of the liver in 3 patients and the right lobe in the other 8. Cyst characteristics and anatomical assignment of hydatid cysts to the segments of the liver are tabulated. The data of the treated patients were analyzed according to mortality, morbidity, duration of operation, blood loss and duration of hepatic inflow occlusion. There was no operative mortality. Follow-up ranged from 2 to 44 months (median 22 months). None of the patients showed evidence of recurrence of hepatic hydatid disease except for one patient, who underwent pericystectomy after intraoperative decompression and sterilization of the cyst.
