Institutions providing population education in the Dominican Republic may help promote mature and responsible behavior in the areas of family life, sex, ecological problems, and the unjust distribution of wealth. Population education is a process that may help individuals understand the causes and consequences of population phenomena for themselves and their communities and evaluate possible measures for alleviating problems and improving present and future quality of life. Population phenomena may be defined as the behavior of the demographic variables fertility, mortality, and migration that determine the size, sex and age composition, and geographic distribution of the population as well as the socioeconomic problems related to these variables. Such problems may include unemployment, housing shortages, subordination of women, illiteracy, and others. The behavior of demographic population although they may contribute to worsening of such problems. Efforts to provide population education in the public sector began in 1979 with assistance from the UN Fund for Population Activities and UNESCO. In the private sector a few institutions provide elements of nonformal population education.
